A unique Circular Design programme started in Finland in autumn 2022 guided 50 Finnish companies through a one-year circular development path. Ethica designed the programme and led the execution together with Design Forum Finland.
From an international perspective, the programme is the first and only national training programme deep-diving into circular design principles and focusing on generating concrete product/service concepts to secure companies’ competitive advantage in the biggest market transition of our time. In addition, this programme prepared companies for the forthcoming Ecodesign Directive requiring product durability, reliability, reusability, upgradability, repairability, and ease of maintenance/refurbishment/recycling in addition to energy and resource efficiency.
Participating companies included e.g., Stora Enso, UPM, ABB, Kiilto, Genelec, Luhta, Stockmann and Marimekko among others.

Circular Design – Pathway Towards a Circular Economy (Event, 4 Oct 2022, Think Corner, Helsinki & Online)
The event explores why sustainability is now on every company’s executive agenda and how this is reflected in product and service development. The programme includes an overview of EU and national climate and circular economy targets, legislative initiatives and mechanisms guiding companies toward a carbon-neutral circular economy. In addition, we dive into market trends—how and why market developments should already be taken into account in product and service design.

We recommend that the entire company team (management, product/service designers, communications & marketing, etc.) participates in the kick-off webinar.
Podcast: Legislative Drivers of Green Development
The EU Green Deal and its implications for companies—particularly taxonomy, the Circular Economy Action Plan, sustainable product policy and the expanded Ecodesign Directive. Listeners gain a comprehensive overview of EU steering mechanisms driving companies to design and manufacture circular-compliant products, and an understanding of impacts on their own company and supply chain: risks and opportunities.
