What is Circular Design?

Circular design transforms product design and customer experiences by using circular materials, healthy chemicals, durable designs, resource recovery, and minimal environmental impact. It drives new business models, services, and partnerships, ensuring competitiveness in the market’s biggest transition.

Circular Design Sprint

Circular Design Sprint is a rapid development process for R&D teams and other key people. In the sprint, you will work as a team and apply the learnings to your own product or service. Therefore the ticket price per company includes admission of 2-5 people per company. Maximum 10 companies can participate in one Sprint -program.

The Sprint consists of three innovation workshops. It is a combination of learning, goal setting, collaborative ideation, and applying the circular design strategies to your own product or service through series of questions, coaching and front-runner examples.

Programme

The Sprint includes a circularity readiness assessment done individually for each participating company before the start of the sprint and three Circular Design workshops (including morning coffee & snack):

Sprint Day 1: Understand (March 4th at 9.00-13.00 in Helsinki)

Sprint Day 2: Ideate (March 18th at 9.00-13.00 – On-line)

Sprint Day 3: Define (April 1st at 9.00-13.00 in Helsinki)

Sprint Day 1 – Understand

The purpose of the Understand Day is to create a systematic overall picture of circular economy and create your preliminary big goal for developing circular business. During the day, you will deepen your expertise and knowledge of the market transition and the positioning of your company in this transformation. The sprint day is strongly linked to your company’s strategic goals, customer understanding and partnerships. In addition, you will learn the principles of circular economy and circular design and apply the learning in practice through Ethica’s circular life cycle model. The day is a great combination of theory, case studies, discussions with other participants, and working with your colleague(s) on your own case!

Sprint Day 2 –  Ideate

Ideate Day delves into the secrets and details of circular product design. You will learn about the product design strategies from two perspectives: 1) what is meant by product properties in accordance with the circular economy, 2) how to make choices regarding materials and chemicals in accordance with circular economy. After hearing about the theory and numerous case studies, you start mapping your own product’s material and chemical flows. At the end of the workshop we will also examine what these circular product features mean from the perspective of partnerships and business models.

Sprint Day 3 – Define

On the third day, we jump into the customer’s shoes. At the beginning of the day, we will go through inspiring examples of attractive concepts and customer journeys developed by the best circular front-runner companies. After that, you will start developing your own customer journey and ways to create lasting customer value in the circular economy. Towards the end of the workshop, we will return to specify the long- and short-term circular economy goals and draw up a preliminary action plan prioritizing the immediate actions for the coming months.

“The structure of the Circular Design Programme has been excellent! The well-planned workshop materials and preliminary tasks have created a great framework for our work.”
